![]() Early reactions, though, have been deeply divided. The paper has not yet been peer reviewed. By examining how many of these putative stitching sites SARS-CoV-2 has, and how relatively short these pieces are, they attempt to assess how much the virus resembles others found in nature. Their claim, published on October 20th on bioRxiv, a preprint server, suggests SARS-CoV-2 has some genomic features that they say would appear if the virus had been stitched together by genetic engineering. Into this fray comes analysis from Alex Washburne, a mathematical biologist who runs Selva, a small startup in microbiome science, Antonius VanDongen, of Duke University, and Valentin Bruttel of University of Würzburg. Others have pointed to the coronavirus engineering going on in laboratories around the world, but particularly in Wuhan-the Chinese city where the virus was first identified. Many think it was a spillover from wild animals. The origins of covid-19 are hotly contested. A Republican was last elected as governor in 2006, and registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by about two to one. The second is that it underscores just how Democratic California has become. Wider recognition will help his presidential chances. He is already channelling campaign funds into attacking Republican governors in other states over social issues. Last year he beat a “recall” campaign that threatened to remove him from office, and now he is rumoured to be considering a presidential bid after his second and final term as governor. The first reason is the resilience and rise of Mr Newsom. Yet the uncompetitive race is still worth watching. Mr Dahle trails Mr Newsom by 23% in the polls. This thrust the word into a fairly new political context: in Scholz’s lexicon, Wumms has become synonymous with a fairly hefty cash injection from the government. In June 2020, Scholz declared that Germany would come “mit Wumms aus der Krise” (out of the crisis with energy, or oomph). He’s likely to have been riffing on his use of the word Wumms when, as Finance Minister, he announced more than €100 billion of financial support to see the country through the Covid crisis. Though Wumms is a fairly well-known colloquialism, Doppel-Wumms appears to be have been Scholz’s own invention. Most recently, it was used by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) when he announced a whopping €200 billion relief package to support households with the rising cost of living. With that in mind, “Doppel-Wumms” can be thought of as something of a double-whammy: it’s a disruptive event or action that is perceived to have double the impact.
